[Bookplate for Brockville Library] In black ink on tan paper, the bookplate consists of a double zigzag border surrounding black text. The library name at the top is flanked by two rosettes and separated from the remaining text by a decorative rule. 42. [Bookplate for Lansdowne] Heraldic Achievement with shield, crest (crown), supporters, and motto ; 1st and 4th Arms, Ermine, on a Bend Azure, a Magnetic Needle, pointing to the Polar Star ; 2nd and 3rd Arms, Argent, a Saltire Gules, and a Chief, Ermine ; Supporters on either side of crest, a Pegasus Ermine, bridled, crined, winged, and unguled, each with a Fleur-de-lis Azure on the shoulder. 43. [Bookplate for Dr. Schilder and Mrs. Schilder] Clock tower with a living quarters and a coned roof on top of it. In pencil, at the bottom of the bookplate appears the text: Peq. Ruqition August 17, 1979. 44. [Bookplate for Mae Burke Craft by A. H.] Central image is of a window with gables to the left and right above a large number of deciduous and coniferous plants and shrubs. The window looks onto a scene with an empty fireplace and a roman mantle above it holding a mounted mirror on top of it. There are various other pictures and bookcases/books held within the room in addition to an open book sitting on an antique armchair partly facing towards the open window. Hanging from the mantlepiece above the fire is a family crest, but it is too small to discern more than general details. The whole image is surrounded by a triple filleted black border. 45. [Bookplate for Dorothy Maclaren Hepton by William Walker Alexander] Brown ink on cream paper. A plain border with a thin brown outline on the outside and thick brown outline on the inside. The image in the center of the bookplate is surrounded by a decorative background. The background has brown dots overlaid with thin white leaves on a stem. The stems curl around the left and right sides of the image. The image in the center is surrounded by a border comprised of three petaled leaves. At the top, bottom, left, and right of the border are two crossed strips covering the leaves. A dark inner border separates the decorative leaves from the center image. The image itself depicts two women sitting in an ancient Grecian scene. There is a building with arches in the left background. Next to the building, right behind the women is a large, shaded column. The foregrounded woman is sitting on a platform. Behind her is a small bowl of flowers. The same flowers decorate her dark hair in a floral crown. She is wearing a flowing white dress with a jewelry band around her right arm, which is holding onto her knees. At her feet is a lyre perched against another ledge. Behind the lyre is a dark, three-legged vessel with smoke pouring from it. There are some bushes behind the vessel and a plain horizon with a dark landscape and a pale sky. To the left of the vessel is a woman either standing or on her knees ; her legs are blocked from view by the sitting woman. The woman is playing a wind instrument, potentially an aulos. Her hair is in a half bun and half down. The ribbons in her hair are also flowing behind her head. Curling ribbons extend from below the image’s bottom border. A thicker ribbon rolls out below the ribbon. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized, serif font. Each word in the owner’s name is printed on its own line, with each line becoming increasingly indented. Two daisy flowers on stems are printed to the left of the last word in the owner’s name. 46. [Bookplate for Charles Fyfe by R. P.] Bookplate printed in black ink, with a purple/blue ink, rubber-stamped annotation. This ex-libris depicts a woman reading to a young boy on a park or garden bench. The idyllic landscape behind them features a lake with two swans swimming in it. Further in the distance is a forest with the silhouettes of two figures standing among the trees and large dramatic clounds sweeping by in the background. 47. [Bookplate for University of British Columbia by Ladislas Kardos] Bookplate has an imposed skyline drawn against a gray background. The background, skyline and the text following is printed on an argent background with the UBC crest located in the lower dexter chief position of the bookplate with "The Library" printed below it. 48. [Bookplate for Hugel] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a lion rampant holding a flower with three petals between its paws. The lion stands atop a crown with elaborate, feathery wings extending upwards to the left and right. The crown is round and flat and decorated with three diamonds across the front. The crown sits on the head of a baronet and knight helm. Elaborate, curling mantling extends to the left and right and down the bookplate, becoming blacker towards the ends. The shield is divided per cross. The top left and bottom right sections are sable and charged with a lion rampant. The lion in the top left faces to the right, whereas the lion in the bottom right faces to the left. Like the lion in the crest, these lions hold a flower with three petals in their paws. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are argent with sable dots. They are each charged with three black diamonds, two over one. The diamonds have black shading on the right-hand sides. Below the shield, a curling ribbon with non-straight edges has the motto printed in black, capitalized, serif font. Below the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate, black, large, sentence case, Gothic font with extensive curling decorations surrounding the text. 49. [Bookplate for B. E. Hutchinson] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate has two sections. The first section has thick borders on the left and right with white outlines. The top border is like a shelf with a slightly shorter, darker section below a longer, paler section. Within the frame is a picture of a house built on the shore of a river. The river is foregrounded at the bottom of the frame. The cliff is rocky with a few trees on it. The house is large and has a brick chimney on the right side. Behind the house are several taller trees. Below that image is a shelf-like structure. The top and bottom shelves are supported by Grecian-style columns. A row of books is shelved in between the two columns. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, capitalized, serif font. Each letter is printed on a spine of a book so the name is off kilter when the books are slanted. In front of the shelved books is an open book propped up on a closed book. 50. [Bookplate for Andrew J. Kirpatrick] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate has a thick black border with a thin inner white border. The bookplate is divided into two parts: the larger part has black corners that round on the inside. A thistle is printed in white on each corner. There is a white border with a thin black border inside it. At the top, a banner with curling ends sweeps across the bookplate. On the banner, the motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. Below the ribbon, an armoured arm extends from a crest-wreath. The right hand is clutching a dagger with the blade pointing to the left. Plants with leaves and berries on a branch extend from the left and right-hand sides of the bookplates. Below that image, there is a white horizontal rectangle with a thin black border. Inside the rectangle, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in cramped, stylized, large, black block font. 51. [Bookplate for John William Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on white paper. Perforated edges with round corners surround the bookplate. The bookplate is surrounded by an incomplete border of two black lines that do not connect at the top. There are spaced out diamond shapes on the border with black circular centres. At the top, the border folds into triangles at the left and right corners. Each corner has a square flower with four petals and one leaf with a darker background. The border frames an image with a rounded pointed top. The image shows a desk with a window looking onto a moving steam engine. At the top of the image is a circle with a white border. In the centre on a gray background is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. The steam engine is outside the window in the centre of the bookplate with steam pouring out. The window has vertical and horizontal stripes with black circles at the intersections of the stripes. There is a curtain on either side of the window. Nothing sits on the window ledge, but on the desk in front is half of a lamp with a decorative, bell-shaped shade, eight books with different spine designs, an ink pot with a feather quill in it, and a workspace with several papers on it. Below the image is a black rectangle with capitalized white font. At the centre of the top and bottom of the rectangle is a slight downward facing point. Below the bottom point in black ink are the initials of the creator and the year of creation. 52. [Bookplate for L. Emile Grothé by Aimé Dufesne] Black ink on white paper. Border has white outlines, shaded for a three-dimensional effect and is filled in with thin black lines. The top and bottom sides of the border indent in the middle with squared corners. The left and right sides of the border indent in the middle with rounded corners. The top half of the bookplate has diagonal black lines extending wider from the centre. The top left corner features a person wearing a feathered headdress and a sash holding arrows in their left hand and a bow in their right hand. They are standing on a decorative ledge connected to the border and sitting atop of an elaborate curlicue. The right corner has the same curlicue and ledge and a person in a long coat and striped hat holding a pouch stands atop it. Between the two figures is an open book. The bottom of the top half of the bookplate contains half a round map of the world surrounded by a thick border of the same style as the overall bookplate border. The owner’s motto is written across the map’s border in thin, capitalized, sans-serif font. A rectangular border of the same design sits in the centre of the bookplate. The top of the border features large, captitalized, serif block font. The font is white with a black background and white stripes surrounding that background. On either side of that text are half circle decorations in a vertical stack between two thin white borders. The centre of the rectangle within the borders has a grey background with capitalized, sans-serif block font printed on top. The font is black with a white outline and dark shading. Two shields hang below the rectangle on the left and right side. The shield on the left is argent with sable dots per fess. The top third of the crest is charged with two fleurs-des-lis. The central portion of the crest, featuring sable and argent stripes. is charged with a lion passant guardant. The bottom third of the crest is charged with three maple leaves with connected stems. The shield on the right is per pale consisting of sable and argent stripes and argent with sable dots. The left side is charged with two lions passant that are argent with sable dots. The right side is charged with a lion sejant erect and eight hearts, each of which are sable and argent striped. Between the two crests, hanging from the central rectangular feature, is a checkered black rectangle with white borders on the left, right, and bottom sides. White curlicues extend from the left and right sides. Similar curlicues, leafy decoration, and black strip adorned with small circles extend from the bottom of the rectangle. The background of the bottom half of the bookplate not covered with other decorative features has the same black stripes as the top half. In the bottom left and right corners of the bookplate are four books each, spines facing out. Next to the books on the left is a black inkwell with two feather quills in it. Next to the inkwell is a beehive on a wooden platform surrounded by five bees. On the right of the beehive is an oil lamp with a bright flame burning. Outside the bottom border, inside the indent, the bookplate creator’s name and date of creation is printed in thin, black, sentence-case, serif font. 53. [Bookplate for Girls’ Reading Room Lending Library] Black ink on orange paper. Border consists of thin black lines with small, round floral decorations. Inside the border, there are several lines of text. The first is in small, bold, black, serif font. The next line is in large, black, capitalized serf font with decorative first letters for reach word. The next line of text has decorative arrows on either side and is printed in small, black, capitalized sans serif font. The next line is in slightly larger black, capitalized, serif font. Underneath is small, italicized thin black serif font with a dotted line for a handwritten number. There is jagged line separating the above font from a short description of the lending terms, printed in black times new roman font. 54. [Bookplate for F. W. R. Johnston] Black ink on cream paper. The border of the bookplate is decorated with black and white checkers with a thin white line on the side of the border. In the center of the bookplate is a modernized heraldic design. The background of the center of the bookplate is black with small white dots. Text is printed at the top of the bookplate in white block letters. In the middle of the bookplate is a crest-wreath from which extends a knight’s armoured arm holding a sword that is printed on top of the block lettering. There is a black eight-pointed star with a hole in the middle on the knight’s elbow. The motto is printed on a ribbon that extends up along the left side of the knight’s arm and then cuts across and starts curling down on the right side of the arm, extending out horizontally on the right side and curling back up again. Capitalized, black, serif font is printed on three parts of the ribbon. The part of the ribbon that curls up on the right side has a black stem with leaves on it. The ribbon has a border of two, thin black lines. Below the crest-wreath is a chunkier scroll with curling ends on all sides. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized, curling, black, serif font. The last name is larger than the first initials. Below the same is a stylized white and black infinity symbol. Within the borders, in the bottom right corner, there is a small white circle with a white cross in the center. 55. [Bookplate for Stanley Harrod] Black ink on cream paper. The bookplate features an elaborate border. A thin black line outlines a thick black and white design featuring repeating white floral motifs in diamond shapes on a black background. A thin white border separates the border from the internal image. The image features a monk writing at a desk. The monk is in white clothes and the wooden desk and chair are black. The desk has a special stand for writing. Above the monk to the left is a window with the shutters open, showing several buildings, one of which is a tall tower, outside. There are trees amongst the buildings and a large fluffy cloud behind the tower. Inside the room, directly above the monk, are several bookshelves attached to the wall. There is some pottery on the top shelf and three rows of books, spines facing out, below. To the top right of the monk is another window with the shutters closed. The shutters appear wooden with round circles cut out of them. The walls and floors of the room are also wooden. On the floor to the right of the desk is a closed book. Below this image, surrounded by a thin white border, is a white rectangle with capitalized, black, serif font printed in it. The words are separated by centered black dots. Between this rectangle and the larger overall border are white, curling ribbons. 56. [Bookplate for Fraser Institute] Black ink on cream paper. In the top-right corner sits a dotted horizontal line. Beneath this rests a circular crest for the library. Along the outer rim of the crest is the name and city of the library ; in the center is a bust of a reindeer is printed above heraldic ribbon with French wording within it. Four maple leaves are also within this inner-portion of the crest. Beneath the crest are three additional doted lines, containing two hand-written notes. 57. [Bookplate for City of Halifax and Citizens’ Free Library] Black ink on cream paper. A coat of arms for the city of Halifax is printed in the upper-portion of the plate. Within this coat of arms stands a sailor on the left, with his hand placed on the crest containing a Belted Kingfisher on a grassy mound. Directly above the crest is a masoned Sable containing a sprig of mayflower. To the right is a fisherman holding a codfish by its head. Both figures and the crest are standing upon heraldic ribbon containing Latin phrasing within it. This portion is followed by the title of the library and three sections with horizontal dotted entries lines for entering the class, book, and accession number. In the lower right corner is a handwritten note in pencil. 58. [Bookplate for Government of Quebec] Black ink on cream paper. A bust of a reindeer is printed above heraldic ribbon with French wording within it. Directly beneath is a second, larger heraldic ribbon containing text indicating presentation. On blank dotted lines is written the presenting institution and the date. At the bottom is a third heraldic ribbon with the receiving institute written within it in Germanic lettering. 59.
